Sun Protection

Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. Of all new incidents of cancer diagnosed in Australia each year, 80 per cent are skin cancers. It has been reported that Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. In 2013, more than 2,200 Australians died from this almost entirely preventable disease (retrieved from http://www.cancer.org.au/preventing-cancer/sun-protection/)

Ultra Violet radiation is not part of the visible spectrum of light, nor is it thermal radiation – unlike sunlight, it cannot be seen, nor can it be felt like the sun’s warmth. As our senses cannot detect UV, overexposure may be damaging our skin and eyes without our knowledge.

Australia experiences some of the highest levels of UV radiation in the world because we are close to the equator and have many clear, blue-sky days. The Earth’s orbit also brings countries in the southern hemisphere (Australia included) closer to the sun in summertime than countries in the northern hemisphere during summer.

Sun protection is required when the UV index reaches 3 or above. Given that children in childcare attend during peak ultraviolet radiation (UVR) times and that they spend much of their day outdoors, childcare has a major role in minimising children’s UVR exposure. Further, childcare provides the ideal opportunity to instill in children long-term positive SunSmart habits.

The good news is there is always a simple and effective way to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. At the early chilhood education/schools, strategies and compliant practices have been established to ensure the children are always following the safe and smart ways.

Goals – What are we going to do?

A balance of Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) exposure is important for health. Too much  of the sun’s UV can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancer in later  life. Too little UV from the sun can lead to low Vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is essential for healthy  bones and muscles and for general health Sunsmart 2015.

Strategies – How will it be done?

Outdoor Activity

The service  will use a combination of sun protection measures whenever

UV Index levels reach 3 and above. This will include:

  • From October to March sun protection is required at all Extra sun protection is needed between 11am and 3pm and during this period outdoor activities should  be minimised. Minimising outdoor activities includes reducing both the number of times  (frequency) and the length  of time (duration) children are outside.
  • From April to September (excluding June and July) outdoor  activity can take place  at any However, from 10am–2pm sun protection is required
  • In June and July when the UV index is mostly below 3, sun protection is not requir Extra care  is needed for services in the far west and north  of NSW and for all children who have very fair skin.

All sun protection measures (including recommended outdoor  times, shade, hat, clothing and sunscreen) will be considered when planning excursions and activities.

Shade

  • All outdoor activities will be planned to occur  in shaded ar
  • The program will be set up in the shade and moved throughout the day to take advantage of shade patterns.

Little Kindy Muswellbrook Early Learning Centre,

2 December 2017

Parents, staff and visitors to childcare Services need to cooperate to ensure anyone entering the Service is in good health so that the possibility of infections spreading to others is minimised.

Parents are asked not to bring any unwell child into the Service, and not to enter the Service if they are unwell themselves. The Nominated Supervisor can refuse entry to any child or adult (including a staff member) who comes to the Service clearly unwell.

Should a child become unwell during the day, the parents or authorised person are contacted immediately to collect the child. The parent will be asked to sign the Incident, Injury, Trauma and Illness Record. If appropriate, the parent will be provided with a Parent/Doctor Report.

As Parents, it is your responsibilities:

  • To keep the Service informed of their child’s current immunisation status.
  • To provide, if requested, a medical certificate verifying that the child who has been unwell has sufficiently recovered to return to the Service.
  • To keep unwell children away from the Service.
  • To remain away from the Service when they themselves are unwell.
  • To arrange prompt collection of their unwell child if contacted by the Service.
  • To inform the Service at any time their child has been exposed to an infectious disease.

Promoting Healthy Eating Since Early Age

Good nutrition is essential to healthy living and enables children to be active participants in play and leisure. Child Care and Education settings provide many opportunities for children to experience a range of healthy foods and to learn about food choices from educators and other children (Early Years Learning Framework, page 30; Framework for School Age Care, page 30).

This Policy details the Service’s approach to mealtimes when the food and beverages consumed by children while at the Service are provided by the Service. It also describes the way educators use mealtimes for a happy and social occasion, and for developing lifelong healthy food choices.

Child care centre needs to promote healthy eating habits to help children to raise their awareness about heathy life style since early age.

Victorian Department of Health, for example, suggests that children who eat healthy foods in their everyday lives can be more alert and interested in activities, which can improve their concentration and learning. To support this positive practice,  all Early childhood education and care service educators are encouraged to support children’s development and growth, and to promote good eating habits. Besides it has been applied in the centre meal menu, one of the strategies that educators can use is to integrate this principle into their curriculum and educational activities.

Educators have an essential role to play in promoting healthy eating to children in their care.

The following shows some tips on how to become a great health promoter by:

  • making mealtimes relaxed and comfortable
  • sitting and eating with the children
  • talking in positive ways about the healthy foods the children are eating
  • encouraging fussy eaters to try new foods
  • being a good role model with the foods you eat, and
  • teaching the children about healthy eating through discussions, questions, games and activities (retrieved from the Department of Health, Victoria)

At the service level, child care centres should implement this policy at all times to ensure the sustainability of this healthy eating habits. The centres need to work together with the parents. At enrolment, for example, parents need to provide the Service with details of their child’s food and drink allergies and of any cultural preferences in food.  The enrolment form has provision for parents to provide the Service with details of any special dietary requirements (e.g. allergies, culture, religion, food preferences). Parents are asked to update this information when any changes occur.

Clothing

The clothing children wear while at the Service influences the quality of their experiences and their learning because clothes can affect their health, safety, comfort, level of independence and ability to play. These issues apply to the clothes children wear to the Service, the spare clothes they bring, spares provided by the Service, and to dress-up clothes.

Children are engaged in various activities during the course of the day; some of these activities can be messy, and/or athletic in nature. Additionally, children are engaged in outdoor play daily, weather permitting. Due to these activities, children are required to be dressed in seasonably appropriate, comfortable, and clothing.

Coats, hats, gloves, scarves and winter boots must be provided in the winter months. It is not necessary for the children to wear their winter boots to school. Teachers will change the children into their winter boots when they go outdoors.

Children are not permitted to wear open toed, and/or open backed shoes. The most appropriate type of shoes for participation in school activities are rubber-soled, sneakers/tennis shoes. Children ages 3 through 5 are required to have one seasonably and size appropriate complete change of clothing at the center at all times.

Children under 3 years of age are required to have two seasonably and size appropriate, complete changes of clothing at the center at all times. A complete change of clothing includes, shirt,

pants, underwear, socks, and shoes. Teachers will post reminders for parents to update changes of clothing as the weather begins to change. All clothing items must be clearly labeled with the child’s first and last name. This includes coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and boots. Little Kindy Muswellbrook is not responsible for lost or damaged items of clothing.

Reading is one of the most important components of your child development of language learning and education. Even though experts might have different opinions about when reading should be introduced, children usually don’t start reading before the age of 5 or 6, and for good reason. Researchers believe that until that age, most children have not yet formed certain neural connections that allow them to decode printed letters and then mentally combine them to make words. A few children are able to read earlier, but most of them just pick it up; they don’t learn through direct instruction.

Your child’s ability to read easily and understand what he is reading may affect his success at school. Reading is not simply a subject which stands alone, rather it is the core mechanism for learning other subjects such as social studies, history, economics, science and even math. As a parent, you will want your child to succeed in school at all levels of his education. Help him gain a more solid reading foundation by working with him to improve his reading speed and comprehension.

In an early childhood context, psychologists suggested that one of the approaches to introduce reading in the early age is through indirect instruction. You may start getting your toddler to get exposure to the books which contain letters and colorful pictures they might be interested and excited to see. In this early age, parent’s job is to show him that books are important — and fun! The best way to accomplish this is by reading to him. As early as 6 months, babies enjoy looking at simple board books with pictures and labels. Between the ages of 1 and 2, repetitive and rhyming books are most likely to capture your child’s interest, and between 2 and 3, he’ll begin to enjoy books with more text and simple story lines. You can also find the books that contain fruit or animals where there are texts on it. You will start introducing one or two letters by pointing to the particular letters that you sound.
